The Witcher game series is finished with the gorgeous The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Players around the world, especially fans of narrative gameplay and classic RPGs, have spent hundreds of hours playing through the games in the series. The beloved and recognizable heroes have forever remained in the hearts of gamers.
Why a card game? There were many mini-games in the Wild Hunt, including the Gwent card game. Precisely because the game had already been written into the lore of the game in advance, the developers were able to organically fit it into the Witcher lineup. The game is an online multiplayer game in the form of a CCG. This means that there are human players in the game, each using their own deck built during the game.
After the start of the game session, each of the players alternately lay out cards from a previously prepared "hand" (a set of cards for battle). A set contains a maximum of 10 cards. Before the start of the round, players may replace cards in their "hand" with the top card in their own collection (deck). Cards represent units of warriors or creatures available in the game, as well as artifacts and spells. Recently added strategic move cards. Each squad card, in addition to the name and keywords, has a certain number of power points (power). For example, the Bomb Thrower card has 4 points, the Gascon Bandit card has 1 point. Actually, this is where the word collectible comes from: players collect the most suitable and strong combinations from their collection of cards. A special resource acts as a limitation on the power of the hand - provisions, which consists of a base stock and an one, determined by the ability of the faction.
At the start of the round, each player plays one card, then it's the other player's turn. Cards are laid out on the field in two rows (long-range and melee). Units gain an advantage depending on the row. For example, when placing a Falibor Soldier card in a melee row, the player gets the opportunity to destroy an enemy unit that has the right to issue an Order. As already mentioned, there are spell cards, including those with area damage (so-called AoE). Damaged cards are sent to the discard pile (or undead), which excludes them from scoring at the end of the round.
During a turn, the player can use special unit skills and spells that buff the entire "hand" or individual cards, or deal damage and weaken enemy units. Depending on the faction, the set of available skills also changes. The round ends either at the end of the cards in the "hand", or when one of the players announces "pass", after which the game will calculate the number of points of the armies made up of cards. The player with the most points wins. Then the next round begins.
To successfully complete the round, the player must choose the time to announce the "pass", if the pass is premature, the opponent scores more points. If you hold out with a pass to a dangerous limit, then you can lose the advantage in the future due to spent cards.
The game session lasts 2 rounds, if there is a draw in one of the rounds, the third one is announced. When all rounds are tied, the game declares both players as winners. In real time, one session can last from 15 to 20 minutes.
In order to encourage the activity of players, developers hold eSports tournaments. Tournaments are held seasonally. On the tournament website, you can view the schedule, apply for participation and organize your own tournament. Currently, the prize pool of the tournament is $10,000.
Like any multiplayer game, Gwent has been overgrown with patches, innovations and additions since its launch. Apparently, the developers are not going to abandon their brainchild and will continue to develop it.
